What are probiotics in agriculture, aquaculture, animal production, and bioremediation?
In farming and environmental operations, the word probiotic is commonly used for beneficial microorganisms applied to soil, crops, water, animals, feed, drains, wastewater, or organic waste. Technically, probiotics are living microorganisms that provide a benefit when used properly; in soil and wastewater, the more precise terms are microbial inoculants, biofertilizers, biocontrols, and bioaugmentation bacteria.
Are probiotics the same as biofertilizers?
Not always. A biofertilizer is a microbial product used mainly to improve nutrient availability, root activity, and soil biological function. A probiotic is a broader term that can include beneficial organisms for animals, aquaculture, and environmental systems. In agriculture, many buyers use the words probiotic, microbial inoculant, and biofertilizer interchangeably, but the correct choice depends on the purpose.
Do probiotics really work in farming and aquaculture?
They can work when three conditions are met: the right organism, the right target, and the right environment. Many failures happen not because biology is useless, but because a product is applied to the wrong zone, exposed to disinfectants, stored poorly, or used without correcting pH, oxygen, moisture, feed quality, or sanitation problems.
